Most of you know that we left India early to come back home and be with family, but we have now booked tickets to leave again on Jan 18th.

The tentative plan:

1/19 – 1/26 Paris
1/27 – 2/13 India
2/14 – 3/18 New Zealand
3/19 – 4/02 Australia

We’ll probably then head to Thailand and putz around southeast Asia before making our way over to Europe. Friends and family are always welcome to meet up with us abroad.

Happy (almost) New Year! You can expect to see some posts about India soon – maybe I’ll finally be caught up to the present before we take off again.

Oct 11 Los Angeles -> Kathmandu, Nepal
Dec 08 Delhi, India -> Christchurch, New Zealand
Jan 11 Auckland, New Zealand -> Hobart, Australia (Tasmania!!)
Jan 25 Sydney, Australia -> Bangkok, Thailand

We’ve booked 4 legs of our RTW trip! We’re planning to spend about a month in Nepal, mostly hiking in the Himalayas, then heading down to India for a month to see, you know, the Taj Mahal and stuff. Maybe we’ll find somewhere to do yoga or meditation, maybe chill on a beach, maybe go camel trekking. Then we’re off to New Zealand for a month of hiking and driving around in a camper van and drooling over LOTR scenery. I would love to do the Milford Track and/or Routeburn Track there. We then fly to Australia for just a couple weeks, first stopping in Tasmania (Tasmanian devils!!) and then the mainland to scope out marsupials. Afterwards, Bangkok, the start of our roam around Southeast Asia. We’re leaving it pretty open after that, but plan to eventually make it to Europe, maybe stopping in Egypt on the way if it’s more stable by then, and then home.

We used miles, so we can still change the dates without penalty. I think this would be a good time to mention that there have been some great credit card deals lately. For instance, Scott and I each signed up for an AA card that offered 75,000 miles if you spent $1500 in the first 3 months, as well as a Capital One card that matched 100,000 miles + 10,000 mile bonus for spending $1000 in the first 3 months (good for $1100 towards any travel purchase like hotels, rental cars, flights, etc.). I’ve also been toying with signing up for the latest deal – 100,000 miles for a British Airways Chase credit card, although I don’t think it waives the first year’s annual fee like the other ones did. Anyway, we were able to get the above itinerary with 110,000 free miles + $230 in fees per person, something to look into when gas and ticket prices are skyrocketing.

Preliminary itinerary

Tentative plan for our ~1 year trip starting mid-October 2011

1. South Asia (2 mos)

  • Nepal
  • India

2. South Pacific (2 mos)

  • New Zealand
  • Australia (may come off the list)

3. Southeast Asia (4 mos)

  • Thailand
  • Cambodia
  • Laos
  • Vietnam
  • Indonesia
  • Singapore (maybe)
  • Malaysia (maybe)

4. Europe (4.5 mos)

  • Belgium
  • Spain
  • Portugal (maybe)
  • France
  • Italy
  • Greece
  • Turkey
  • Egypt

Scott would love to add Japan to the list, but I don’t think that will fit in our budget.  We’ll probably have to narrow the list down further as it is.   We’d also like to find a few places where we can stop and stay for about a month or so and do things like take cooking classes, meditate, volunteer.  Maybe in Thailand?  Italy?  In any case, we’ll probably buy a one-way ticket to Nepal and then play it by ear.  I definitely want to do the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal and the Milford Track in New Zealand, but after that we’ll be pretty flexible.
